By Heath McAlpine

Tim Macrow has made history by taking out the first S5000 race at Sandown Raceway, holding off a sustained attack from John Martin.

Macrow led from start-to-finish, but early on held a comfortable 5s lead before Martin started to work it down to 0.4s. The two out front traded fastest laps with Macrow also taking those honours by lapping in 1m 05.1210s.

Third was Garry Rogers Motorsport Supercars driver James Golding, who held out Matt Brabham early, finishing 4s behind the lead duo. Brabham also had a battle on his hands for fourth where Will Brown pressured him for the duration of the race.

Former Formula 1 star Rubens Barrichello made a poor jump at the start and was eased off into the dirt on the exit of Turn 1 dropping him to seventh, behind Alex Davison.

Ricky Capo was another to make a poor start and dropped to eighth, while Barton Mawer and Tim Berryman completed the top 10.

The only car to have an issue was Tom Alexander’s after stopping upon the exit of Turn 4.

Tomorrow’s action for S5000 kicks off at 10:05am AEST.
