It has been announced today that the pre-Bathurst 1000 endurance will take place at The Bend Motorsport Park next year moving away from the traditional destination of Sandown.

Tickford Racing driver Chaz Mostert feels that although it would be a good circuit for the 500km race, the dirt that the cars bring onto the racetrack when they run wide could be an issue in a longer race.

At the end of Friday’s running officials levelled out the massive ruts that appeared on the outside of the kerbs due to the excessive use by the drivers.

“It (the 500km race) will be tough here, today’s race was tough because as soon as someone has a little moment and drops a wheel off on the dirt the car behind loses two seconds just trying to hold onto it,” he said.

The 2014 Bathurst 1000 winner suggested that people could deliberately put a wheel on the grass to compromise the other drivers behind.

“I think as a driver you come into those corners, like last year, for example Anton, if he knew he could just drop a bit of a wheel off onto the dirt, the driver knew the car behind would lose at least two seconds,” he said.

“It is one of those things, you make the mistake and you go off and you see car behind you struggling, or the dust stays on the circuit.”

At Sandown Raceway floppy ‘witches hats’ are used as a deterrent to stop drivers running over the inside of the kerb and gaining an advantage.

“At Sandown the fast left Turn 6 with the witches hats in there, they kind of destroy your car, it needs something like that because here it is inviting,” he suggested.

“You just have to be accountable for using the dirt which is not the racetrack.”

Mostert hopes that this issue is fixed for the endurance race next year and joked that a lot of ‘witches hats’ would be needed for the 4.95km South Australian circuit.
