CARRERA CUP

THE YOUNG guns showed their wares in practice for round six of the Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia at The Bend Motorsport Park today.

Cooper Murray who was in a league of his own at the previous Townsville round, again showed the way, albeit by just one tenth of a second over Cameron Hill while the stalwarts of the category, David Wall and Warren Luff were third and fourth after the two sessions.

Still recovering from a hand injury from the Darwin round four, Jordan Love was fifth best ahead of Nick McBride and Michael Almond as series leader Dale Wood could only muster a tenth overall. In between were TAG Heuer Pro-Am front runners Adrian Falck and Liam Talbot with eighth and ninth.

FORD FALCONS dominated with the six fastest times in qualifying where Hamish Ribarits (Matt White Motorsport) put in a blinder to top the session by four tenths over his nearest rival.

Ribarits slotted series leader and the pacesetter in the earlier practice sessions, Broc Feeney (Paul Morris Motorsport) to second spot with Zak Best (MWM) third fastest. Starting from the outside of the second row in race one will be Jayden Ojeda (Anderson Motorsport) ahead of Nic Carroll (MWM) and Jon McCorkindale.

Josh Fife (Brad Jones Racing) was the best of the Holden Commodores in seventh place with Joel Heinrich (Falcon) next. Ninth and tenth were the quickedt of the Kumho Cup privateers in Brad Neill (Falcon) and Jim Pollicina (Commodore).

WHILE A tribunal hearing could still determine the result of round four, Justin Ruggier (Mustang) fired off the first significant shots of round five by scoring pole position for race one tomorrow.

In a close contest where 0.07s covered the top three, Ruggier edged out Luke Fraser (Camaro) and Kyle Honour (Camaro) while reigning title holder Joel Heinrich (Altima) was fourth best and just 0.16s away.

Ruggier’s major rival Kel Treseder (Camaro) finished the session fifth, in front of Josh Anderson (Camaro) and Blake Sciberras (Mustang). Eighth was Paul Morris after his Altima had an electrical gremlin in practice while Leigh Bowler and Matt Forbes-Wilson were ninth and tenth.

AS HE had done in the practice sessions, West Aussie Aldo Paoli set the pace in qualifying aboard his Chev Camaro. He made up for being disqualified from the first session by being almost 2s faster than anyone for most of the grid-deciding outing.

Only later did Victorian Andrew Williams (Holden Torana XU-1) who was second fastest, get to within 0.9s. Third was Ian Mewett (Ford Mustang), ahead of Craig Allan (Torana), Graeme Jarrett (Camaro), Chris Stern (Mustang) and Woolhouse (Mustang) in the best of the pre-1965 cars.

Missing from qualifying was Darryl Hansen in his Mustang after he and Neil Oatway (Ford Falcon XY GT) came into contact in practice one while negotiating a slower car, and the Mustang then hit a concrete wall.

SETTING THE grid for the first of two 50-minute races for round five Aaron Love went fastest as title protagonists Chris Perini (currently second) and GWR teammate and joint series leader Peter Paddon were second and third respectively.

Third in the points Mitch Neilson was fourth fastest ahead of Adam Lisle and BD Soutar-Dawson sharing, Stephen Champion, Kostinken Pohorukov, Paul Braico, Chris Medland and Brad Neilson who is currently fourth behind his son.

In the earlier practice session Greg Kenny had his starter motor fail after spinning and the session was later shortened when Peter Clare spun off.
