THE VIRGIN Australian Supercars Championship copped its first ever wet race in far North Queensland but luckily for the Watpac Townsville 400 supports, conditions were mainly dry.

DUNLOP SUPER 2

HE MIGHT have been gifted the race one victory yesterday but there was no doubt about Bryce Fullwood’s second race victory in round three aboard the Matt White Motorsport Nissan Altima.

He was beaten away by Tim Blanchard (Brad Jones Racing Holden Commodore VF) who started on the front row alongside pole-sitter Jake Kostecki (Kostecki Brothers Racing VF). The latter had a shocker of a start and was seventh at the end of the first lap.

Fullwood executed a masterly move on Blanchard at turn two after a second safety car restart to grab the lead. Brenton Grove (Triple 8 VF) followed Fullwood through one corner later at turn three to assume second for the duration.

Behind it was Kurt Kostecki (Triple 8) ahead of Zane Goddard (MWM Altima), Adam Kostecki (Image Racing VF), Thomas Randle (Tickford Racing Ford Falcon FG/X), Eggleston Motorsport Commodore team mates, Jack Perkins and Will Brown, and Jack Smith (BJR VF).

The first safety car appeared on lap one when Jordan Boys (IM VF) was caught up in contact with Brown and Matt Chahda (FG/X) that stopped him at turn two with rear suspension damage. The second SC came when Chahda lost his rear wing and crashed after turn one.

Randle was repositioned to 15th with a 15s penalty for another restart infringement, this time for overlapping before turn 13, and Justin Ruggier (EM VF) copped a penalty for tagging Ash Walsh (Matt Stone Racing VF) at the same corner.

PICKING UP from where he left off after race one, Cooper Murray posted another two victories to clean sweep round five.

It started with the Endurance Cup race early in the day where the McElrea Racing driver won by a mammoth 11.4s, surpassing his effort of Saturday. Teammate Warren Luff held second until a broken front strut would deny a team one-two as he couldn’t hold off Sonic Racing’s Michael Almond.

Dale Wood maintained fourth throughout, ahead of Nick McBride who won a three-way fight with Jordan Love and David Wall. Cameron Hill was next ahead of Anthony Gilbertson, taking the TAG Heuer Pro-Am win ahead of Adrian Flack and Roger Lago.

It was a far closer result in race three where Murray was victorious by 1.7s over Wood with Love third. Fourth went to Hill who just held off Luff. Almond recovered a couple of spots after a poor opening lap that saw him drop to eighth, finishing ahead of Wall, Thomas Maxwell and McBride.

The Pro-Am honours went to Miles ahead of Dean Cook and Lago. Gilbertson had been the front runner but had contact with Steve Richards at turn two on lap two. Gilbertson was penalised 30s, Richards was out, and so too Adrian Flack, an innocent victim.

WITH A perfect hole-shot at the start, Tim Brook was an all-the-way winner of the race six, the third and last for round two, and bolstered his series lead.

He beat fellow front row starter Dylan Thomas off the line, who then lost out to Steve Owen and later Luke King passed them both to snare second. Holding fifth early, Declan Fraser showed the way to George Gutierrez, before both were relegated by Lachlan Gibbons.

Aaron Borg finished ninth ahead of Kane Baxter-Smith, Liam McAdam and Ben Grice who surged up the order, having started 25th. Harry Hayek copped rear suspension damage from a three-way clash at turn two on lap four which also involved Peter Vodanovich and Jaylyn Robotham. Emily Duggan was another retiree, black flagged for a trailing exhaust.

ECB SUPERUTES

WINNING RACE three has given Cameron Crick (Mitsubishi Triton) the round four victory. He controlled from the outset and crossed the line 2.4s ahead of Ryal Harris (Mazda BT50) with Toby Price (Triton) a similar distance away in third.

Tom Alexander (Isuzu D-MAX) was a lonely fourth, once he was able to clear Ben Walsh (Toyota Hilux). The latter then had to ward off his teammate where it was a tight 0.18s between them at the flag. Chris Formosa (Ford Ranger) finished ahead of Craig Thompson (Toyota Hilux) but was docked 15s for an incident between the pair at turn 13.

Earlier in the reverse grid race two, Harris held off Alexander for a narrow win. Walsh was dicing with Crick for third until a spin. The latter was lucky to avoid an impact as Price passed both. Behind Walsh, in the end, was Thompson until he was penalised 15s for contact on Formosa at turn 11. Woods was a retiree when he lost his front brakes.
