INDYCAR: ROSSI SUPERIOR AT ROAD AMERICA
Alexander Rossi has put in an utterly superior drive to claim the Indycar win at Road America.
The Andretti Autosport driver led every lap but one on the high-speed road course, winning by nearly 30 seconds over Australian Will Power.
Rossi’s second victory in this years NTT IndyCar Series season which helped close the gap the championship leader Josef Newgarden to just seven points.
“It was probably one of the best race cars I’ve ever had,” Rossi said of his No. 27 Honda.
“We have been quick through the whole season, but we just haven’t really had it come our way as many times as we want, for one reason or another. … To come out and be able to do what we did today is a huge testament to the whole organization.”
After starting second Rossi passed pole sitter Colton Herta after side by side battle through the opening sequence of corners.
Power started third in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet and moved up a position through the first round of pit stops. He remained there to log his best finish of the 2019 season ahead of teammate Newgarden who rounded out the podium.
“Very good result for us.” said Power.
“That’s all we had. Alex (Rossi) was on another planet there.”
“The two guys we needed to have a bad day were Alex and Josef (Newgarden) and they keep having good days, so certainly makes it tough to catch up in the championship.”
“We’ll just keep chipping away with the Verizon Chevy to see what we can do.”
Graham Rahal and Scott Dixon completed the top five. The Kiwi driver putting in putting a solid comeback drive after spinning and dropping to the rear of the field early in the race.
The next NTT IndyCar Series race is the Honda Indy Toronto on the streets of Exhibition Place.
