It was a yellow, red and white Mustang that took victory, but not the championship winner’s as teammate Fabian Coulthard continued his hot form to take victory at Phillip Island.

A delay during Scott McLaughlin’s pit sequence hurt the reigning champion as he emerged behind his teammate Fabian Coulthard and Anton De Pasquale. McLaughlin replicated a move he completed on De Pasquale’s teammate David Reynolds last year, to take second and continue his charge towards the championship.

A sensor issue within the ECU caused a slight worry within the Erebus Motorsport pits with De Pasquale in third, but it failed to rear its head giving the young Victorian his maiden podium finish.

The race was Safety Car free with the top 10 completed by Will Davison, Chaz Mostert, Cameron Waters, Shane van Gisbergen, Rick Kelly and a charging Tim Slade, who moved from 20th to ninth with his teammate Nick Percat rounding out the top places.

Todd Hazelwood started in the top 10, but was hit by James Courtney, which dropped him to the back. He recovered to 16th, while Courtney was troubled by right front tyre failures.

David Reynolds and Jamie Whincup finished outside the top 10 in 11th and 12th, respectively, hampering their title chances.

The next round of the Supercars Championship is the Perth Supernight hosting Races 11 and 12 on May 2-4.
