The 2019 CAMS NSW Motor Racing Championships kick off at Wakefield Park this weekend, with a mixture of old and new machinery on the two-day program.

The Group N Historic Touring Cars has attracted a variety of classic machines from the 1960s and 70s and include Bathurst’s Michael Anderson in his Ford Falcon XY GT. Anderson has more recently been campaigning an ex-Ford Performance Racing Falcon BF in the Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Car Series.

Brad Tilley will swap his Touring Car Masters XY for a Ford Mustang while Michael Rose, the owner of Goulburn’s well-known Roses Café will also be behind the wheel of a Mustang.

HQ Holdens’ reigning champion Brett Osborn will resume his rivalry with brothers Chris and Jason Molle, while Duane Cambridge, Scott Walker, Chris Buckley and Glenn Deering will also be among the front-runners.

The NSW Production Touring Car Championship has attracted a healthy 27-car field and although the Wakefield Park circuit typically suits the lighter and more nimble vehicles, the larger V8s have reigned supreme.

Matthew Holt took his HSV Clubsport to three race wins at the Southern Highlands venue last season, but will be challenged by Tony Virag in his Class A1 HSV GTS. The latter will also be keeping an eye on his daughter Corrine who slots into a Class B2 Commodore SS-V.

Also among the outright contenders will be Anthony Soole in his newly-built BMW M4, while former Toyota 86 Series champ Jimmy Vernon steers a Mitsubishi EVO X. The class battles in PTC will provide keen interest, with Class D set to be interesting between five Toyota 86 drivers.

The fastest cars on this weekend’s program will be the Sports Sedans, with Steve Lacey in his Chev Camaro keen to get his title defence off on the right note. Lacey’s main adversary, Birol Cetin is back with his Camaro, while Doulman Automotive team-mates Simon Copping (Holden Commodore VZ) and Grant Doulman (Chev-powered Ford Falcon) will challenge for race wins along with the returning Anthony Macready in his Nissan 300ZX/Chev.

The experienced Dylan Thomas is the clear favourite for Formula Vee honours, although he will face opposition from Simon Pace and Craig Sparke.

The program is completed by the Superkarts, including a mixture of 250cc, 125cc gearbox and 125cc non-gearbox karts. John Pellicano will be the driver to beat in the 250s, Aaron Cogger and Mark Robin will be the main challengers in 125GB and Alan Dodge and Mark Vickers are the main contenders in 125NGB.
