TOBY PRICE has won the final stage of the 2019 Dakar Rally to claim his second title for the marathon event.

The Australian, who battled through the event with a broken wrist he sustained while training, continued KTM’s winning streak bring the total to 18 straight wins.

“Some things fell my way and everything worked out perfectly. It feels like I am living a dream at the moment.” said Price at the finish line.

“I will go home, rest this arm, have some MRI scans and see what damage we have done. I did not think I could win, I thought if I could get to stage 3, I would have been happy.”

Price’s main rival, Pablo Quintanilla, pushed hard early in order to beat the Australian but crashed just 10 kilometres into today’s stage. While Husqvarna rider was able to continue the stage he lost 20 minutes to drop back to fourth in the overall standings.

KTM riders filled the podium with Matthias Walkner moving up to second after Quintanilla’s fall. An earlier penalty from Stage 8 on Sam Sunderland was withdrawn after a review moving him back up to third in final classifications.

Australian Rookies Ben Young and James Ferguson completed their first Dakar in 51st and 67th in the class respectively. While our Quad class representative, John Maragozidis finished 15th.

Toyota has finally won it’s first Dakar with Nasser Al-Attiyah completing the milestone victory by cruising through the final stage to complete his domination of the 2019 event.

Al-Attiyah avoided the trouble that his key rivals struck and had built up a significant buffer over the rest of the field to allow his to take a conservative approach on the final 112km stage between Pisco and Lima, ensuring the win for the Japanese manufacturer.

A consistent measured approach from Nani Roma saw him benefit when many of the leading contenders suffered issues, to finish the 2019 Dakar in second place in his 4×4 Mini.

Sebastien Loeb who had set the pace winning the most stages in this years Dakar completed the car class podium, finishing the day with the second fastest time to end the event just under two hours behind Al-Attiyah.

With nothing to lose, 10 hours off the pace of the leaders, last years winner Carols Sainz took home bragging rights by winning the last stage of this years event, but only just, beating a determined Loeb by just 42 seconds.
