Kimi Raikkonen will start the Italian Grand Prix from pole position leading a Ferrari front row lockout at their home race.

The Finn was the last driver to cross the line in a rapid succession of quick times after the chequered flag was dropped. Notching up the fastest ever lap in Formula 1 history with a 1m19.119s.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton held the top spot early and bettered the mark with a 1m19.294s on his final run, only to be beaten Sebastian Vettel who was the next car to cross the line and then Raikkonen.

Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) ended qualifying fourth fastest ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Daniel Ricciardo was always destined to start from the rear of the field due to grid penalties after swapping his engine prior to this weekends running, so only banked a conservative time in Q3 and didn’t set a lap in Q2. He’ll be joined at the rear of the field by Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg who also replaced an engine.

Romain Grosjean was the best of the rest of the field to qualify in sixth for Haas, while the surprise packet was Lance Stroll who managed to drag his Williams through to the final segment of qualifying and will start from tenth.

The Italian Grand Prix is scheduled to commence at 11:10pm AEST.
