CAMS Young Driver of the Year Cameron Shields will return to compete in the Formula 3 Premier Series in 2018.

Shields won the Formula 3 National Class with Gilmour Racing in 2016 in an older model chassis and will return to the team to compete in the full season in the open class in their 2017 championship winning Dallara F308.

“I am looking forward to once again competing in the fastest open wheel race cars in Australia.” said Shields

“I have been impressed by the resurgence of interest which the category enjoyed during the 2017 season and intend to pick up where I left off at the end of the 2016 championship.”

“To say the least, I am keen to get amongst the action at the very front of the pack this year. I enjoyed the multi-category competition of 2017 and with our current plans nearing completion, I am looking forward to an even bigger year in 2018. Being back, again with Gilmour Racing in Formula 3, feels like coming home!”

Gilmour Racing team principal Errol Gilmour is delighted with the youngsters return to his Brisbane based squad.

“Cameron impressed us all when he first stepped into a Formula 3 car at only 14 years of age in late 2015.” said Gilmour.

“His performances consistently improved throughout his 2016 championship winning year in our F307 car. I am confident his driving style will be rewarded by the extra performance the later model car now offers.”

“Testing at QLD Raceway, Cameron has adjusted very well to the increased downforce of the F308. His experience with the Hankook tyres the category now uses saw him on very a competitive pace in only the third session of our first day.”

“This years’ championship starts at Winton on March 9 and the car that Cameron is now driving currently has the outright lap record there, set when Chris Anthony won the 2016 Formula 3 round, so we have a great starting point for our set up.”

Shields is expected to make further announcements about his racing commitments in coming weeks.

The Australian Formula 3 Premier Series starts with the Australian Motor Racing Series meeting at Winton on March 9-11.
