Multiple WRC champion, Sebastien Loeb has crashed out of the 2018 Dakar Rally on Stage 5.

The Stage 4 winner crashed his Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi just five kilometers into the stage on the fifth day of the event. Despite the crash, the Frenchman was able to get going again, only to get stuck once more before deciding to exit the race due to an injury suffered by his co-driver Daniel Elena.

“There was a hole that I didn’t see, we fell in on the front of the car with a big impact. It was very deep and impossible to get out. It is frustrating as we were in a good position.” said Loeb after his withdrawal.

Out in front of the car class, fellow Peugeot driver Stéphane Peterhansel won the stage extending his overall lead to over 30 minutes ahead of Carlos Sainz.

In the bike class, the performance of the day went to Joan Barreda. The Honda rider dominated the 266km stage, winning the stage a clear 10 minutes faster than anyone else in the class, to move from 13th to fourth in the overall standings at the end of day five.

Yamaha rider Adrien van Beveren maintains his overall class lead, with a minute advantage over Honda’s Kevin Benavides.

Australian Toby Price maintained his sixth position in the class, just 10 minutes behind the leaders in the overall standings. Fellow Aussie Rodney Faggotter (Yamaha) now sits in 17th an hour behind the front-runners. While Dakar Rookie, Scott Britnell (KTM) continued his progress to move up to 79th.
