After a breakthrough 2017 WRC season where he took victory in Italy and Germany, Ott Tanak will arrive at Toyota next season with a new goal and a different approach to the one that resulted in him finishing third in this year’s title.

Tanak admitted he had never had a WRC season like this one and admitted to wanting to add wins rather than championships.

“No doubt it has been my best season in the WRC, maybe our approach was not right for fighting for the championship,” explained Tanak.

“Obviously when we started the season we were still missing our first win so I was more focusing on winning rallies than collecting the points. Yeah, okay end of the season we were quite close to put some pressure on Sebastien [Ogier], but actually I think we were still not ready to fight for the Driver’s Championship. Definitely next year in Monte Carlo, we’ll have a different mindset and we will have different targets.

“It’s been a nice season, it’s always good to be in a winning team that win World Championships and really great to see a private team win the Manufacturer’s Championship.”

The fast Estonian has targeted next year’s championship and is confident after the year he has had, which apart from his two wins included five podiums, including his second place in Coffs Harbour.

“I think there is no secret we at least want to fight for the Driver’s Championship, it’s our personal target, we were close this year and I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to do it in the future,” Tanak suggested.

Even with his move to Toyota, he is confident that Toyota can give him the right machinery for next year’s season.

“Okay, we are going to chaser team, but still we see that Toyota are capable of doing anything so we need to work harder than so we can achieve.”
