Scott McLaughlin has set a Supercars record by sealing the Pole Ward for 2017 – in August.

The DJR Team Penske driver needed to take pole for Race 17 and looked to be under threat, when Red Bull HRT’s Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen leapt to the top of the timing screens.

Mark Winterbottom immediately unseated SVG, but McLaughlin had a second lap to complete…

The margin was a dazzling 0.2150s, which is becoming about the default margin the New Zealander had had this season.

“I am looking forward to the Christmas party with the boys!,” said McLaughlin after his 12th pole position.

“I am really enjoy my relationship with [race engineer] Ludo [Lacroix]. Last night it was not the perfect lap and he is really making me thinking about it.”

Winterbottom took second place and laid a lot of the credit in front of race engineer Brendan Hogan.

“”Brendan and I have got the green light to do our thing and it is showing,” said ‘Frosty’. “I understand what the car is doing. We are going in the right direction.”

Third was van Gisbergen ahead of Fabian Coulthard, while Whincup edged out Tim Slade for fifth ahead of David Reynolds, Scott Pye and Craig Lowndes.

Race 17, over 31 laps, is due to start at 4:25pm.
