Scott McLaughlin has taken his 11th pole for Sunday’s Supercar race at Queensland Raceway.

The Shell V-Power driver looked to be on the right end of a 1-2 for the team, with Fabian Coulthard alongside after the drivers completed their second runs.

But McLaughlin was not happy with his lap and came out for a third run, a set a staggering 1m08.4208s, the fastest-ever Supercars lap at the Ipswich track and 0.4s faster than he want at the same time on Saturday.

“It was nice to go again on the last set of tyres and go faster,” said McLaughlin, who took his fifth straight pole.

“Number 11 so far this year is pretty unbelievable. I saw the number and I was taken aback, but I lost a tenth in the first sector today…”

It was just as well that McLaughlin went out for a third run. Chaz Mostert leapt to P2 at the end of the session, 0.1811s behind McLaughlin.

“There is still a bit of work today but to be on the front row today is pretty awesome,” he said.

“We just need to find a little bit more.”

Jamie Whincup bounced back hard from a bad Saturday, taking third place ahead of Fabian Coulthard.

“Much happier today. We have balance.

“It’s so different around here. We are hard on the rev limiter, it is almost like we need to pull another gear, with the new tyres.”

Shane van Gisbergen was fifth fastest in the second Red Bull car, ahead of Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes.

Fastest of the Wildcard drivers was Todd Hazelwood in 21st, right behind his enduro co-driver Tim Blanchard. James Golding was second ‘in class’, ahead of his GRM teammate James Moffat.

Today’s Race 16 will run over 65 laps and is due to start at 1405.
