MATTIAS EKSTROM SKIPS RALLYCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOR DTM
Mattias Ekström will skip this weekends World Rallycross round in Höljes, Sweden in favour of the DTM round at Norisring in Germany.
The Swedish Audi factory driver who currently who won last years World RX title and currently sits second in this years standings will miss his home Rallycross event due the scheduling conflict with the German DTM series, in which he also competes for Audi.
“It’s too bad that there is a scheduling conflict just between my home race in Höljes and one of my favourite DTM races. I would have loved to contest both events but from a logistic point of view, doing so unfortunately is impossible.” said Ekström.
Audi Motorsport Director Dieter Gass, made the call, sighting the manufacturers interest in DTM being the priority.
“At the end of the day, our works involvement in DTM represents our priority. Mattias has got the chance of winning his third DTM title, this year, and always delivered in great style, at the Norisring. Furthermore, it is our home race meeting and we need Mattias, there.” said Gass.
Ekström currently sits fourth in the DTM standings, just 8 points behind series leader Rene Rast.
Norisring is a happy hunting ground for Ekström, having won there in 2015 as well as several podium results.
In Ekström’s place at Höljes will be fellow Swedish driver P-G Andersson, who is no stranger to World RX having competed last year for Marklund Motorsport in a VW Polo.
Ekström is best known to Australian’s for his impressive one off appearance at the Bathurst 1000 in the Xbox Wildcard car in 2013.
