Supercars have unveiled their new single seater open wheel category, Super5000, which is set to join the Supercars support categories in 2018, as reported by Auto Action back in March.

The new cars, dubbed a modern take of Formula 5000, have been designed in South Australia by Oscar Fiorinotto and feature a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and will run Supercars own 5.0 litre V8 engine and Albins transaxle gearbox.

While Supercars owns the rights to the category, the project is being funded by PAYCE Consolidated, a long-time motorsport sponsorship with it’s Wilson Security brand.

According to Supercars website, the first Super5000 car has already undergone several test runs at Phillip Island, Mallala and Adelaide International Raceway at the hands of Supercar drivers Garth Tander, Lee Holdsworth and Alex Davison.

The new Super5000 category will be seen as direct competition to Chris Lambden’s Formula Thunder 5000 that made it’s public debut at last years Muscle Car Masters.
